Step Back in Time at Allaire State Park

It’s not often you find a place that our modern society leaves behind. In our ever-changing world, the cycle of expansion and modernization is ever-present. Trees get cut down to make more room, buildings get taller, one more cell phone tower goes up, etc.

This is what makes places like
Allaire State Park so special. This patch of green in Monmouth County is a sanctuary for the old. Old trees, old trails, and an entire historic village have been left undisturbed by progress.

Take a journey back in time with us as we share the best reasons to visit Allaire State Park. Grab some sturdy shoes, put your phone on airplane mode, and get ready for a peaceful retreat away from the noise.

History

First, some history. Allaire goes back all the way to the early 19th century when it was home to the Howell Iron Works Company. Founded by James P. Allaire (hint, hint), the company thrived by producing pig iron from the vast bog iron deposits. A village was built up around the operation and due to the Industrial Revolution’s high demand for iron, became a bustling community.

Throughout the mid 19th century however, the red-hot Howell Works industry started to cool, and eventually fizzled out. Increased competition and depletion of the local iron reserves led to a permanent closure of the house that James built in the late 1840s.

Later on, historians were attracted to the remaining relics of the once-busy town, and efforts were made to preserve it as a historic site. The state park was officially established in 1947, with the town and surrounding landscape being made available for visitors to appreciate both the local history and lush scenery of the region.

Things to Do

Pretty neat, huh? Now let’s go over what you can expect to see when you visit Alliare National Park. The Village is the obvious highlight, but there are many other reasons to grab a day pass and head off into these historic woods. Whether you’re a history buff or an outdoor enthusiast, you’re in for a good time.

Allaire Village

Let’s start with the village. This is the reason the park exists, right? Many of the remaining buildings from the early days of the industrial age have been meticulously restored to their former glory for visitors to experience. Here are some things you can experience as you tour the Village:

  • Explore Historic Buildings: Visit the blacksmith shop, general store, carpenter’s shop, and the historic homes of workers and artisans.
  • Experience Living History: Engage with costumed interpreters who bring the village to life with demonstrations and stories from the past.
  • Attend Seasonal Events: Enjoy various festivals and events held throughout the year, such as the Fall Harvest Festival and Christmas Lantern Tours.

Pine Creek Railroad
